Common Questions about Pet Assistance Programs in Baton Rouge

If the animal is sick or needs veterinary care, you may call Animal Control or bring it to an Emergency Vet Clinic.

We have two 24 hour Emergency Vet Clinics in Baton Rouge which are Sherwood South Animal Hospital and LSU Vet Med at the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital. For Prairieville, you may contact Cypress Lake Animal and Emergency Hospital.

If you decide to foster the found animal – keep it in a secured location separate from your children or your pets if you have any until the owner is found or a veterinary professional can see them. You do not want to infect your children or pets with anything the found animal may have.

To find a foster or rescue that could possibly hold the animal or accept it into their program to give it medical care and help it find a forever home please contact a local rescue, or rescue that may specialize in the species or breed of the animal.

If you want to foster through an organization – IT IS FREE! Rescues fund vetting, provide food and other supplies for fosters. You can contact the rescue of your choice and apply on their website or through their direction to become a foster! Foster’s only commitment to their foster animal is to make sure they are safe, happy, loved and that they make all vet appointments and adoption events set by their rescue!

Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS)
  • CAAWS Spay/Neuter Coupon Program: CAAWS offers a unique program open to residents of East Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes. CAAWS provides $25 spay/neuter coupons that can be redeemed at a participating veterinary clinic. The coupons are non-transferable. The program is only offered to individual pet owners for their companion animals. The program is offered on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a limit of two coupons per month and six coupons per year per household. This program is available to residents of the following parishes only: Ascension, East Baton Rouge, East Feliciana, Iberville, Livingston, West Baton Rouge and West Feliciana. • Feral Cat Trap, Spay/Neuter, and Release Program (TNR): The TNR Program is available to individuals who need assistance sterilizing free-roaming feral cats. CAAWS loans out traps (refundable deposit required) and offers vouchers for spay/neuter and rabies vaccination of feral cats in East Baton Rouge and the surrounding parishes. The TBR program has been proven to be the humane alternative of controlling cat reproduction and helps to reduce the euthanasia rates at local municipal animal shelters. Baton Rouge Spay/Neuter (BRSN)
  • Baton Rouge Spay/Neuter is a division of the Spirit of Cheyenne a registered non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing low cost spay and neuter services for dogs and cats to the general public. They also offer special contracts to humane organizations involved in spay/neuter. For more information and prices , check out their website: www.brsn.org.
Companion Animal Alliance (CAA)
  • Pets For Life: In June 2017, CAA began strategic outreach in 70805 and 70802, Baton Rouge’s most under-served community where 38% of residents live below poverty. In January 2022, they have added three additional zip codes, 70807, 70815, and 70791. By bringing free animal medical care, services and information to people and their pets who live in communities that lack access to affordable veterinary care — areas that have historically been overlooked by the animal welfare field – CAA’s Pets for Life removes barriers to resources for those facing socio-economic and geographic challenges. The program philosophy promotes the understanding that a lack of financial means does not equate to a lack of love felt for and provided to a pet. To learn more visit: https://www.caabr.org/pfl.

CAA’s Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) helps East Baton Rouge Parish families having trouble keeping their pets find a better solution than bringing them to the shelter. The shelter is a loud and stressful place for pets who are used to a home environment; keeping them in your home while waiting to rehome them or accessing needed resources ensures they stay stress-free.

CAA also provides Rehoming Services through Project Safety Net.

Capital Area Animal Welfare Society can also help through its Public Adoptions.
